This study, which is funded by the National Institute on Aging (AG21091), focuses on the ethical aspects of conducting research with cognitively impaired individuals, including people with Alzheimer disease and other types of dementia. Three research projects that use qualitative research methods are included in this study. The first project, based on observations, will describe the procedures investigators use to assess decisional capacity of dementia patients and obtain informed consent for research participation. Using semi-structured interviews, the second project will examine the opinions of people with mild to moderate dementia and their surrogate decision makers regarding their attitudes toward the patients’ participation in research and the role of surrogate decision makers. The third project will use content analysis to examine how federally funded research protocols describe the methods investigators will use to obtain informed consent from potential research participants who have dementia or are at risk of developing dementia.
